The room where it never happens:
As the parties become more ideological, we have Democrats who are again willing to support progressive ideas. But for the GOP, becoming more ideological means that they have a hard right who really do want to govern the US like before the modern world. So that want to balance the budget and if they could we’d be back to the gold standard. They also want no taxes in their fantasies, and no govt departments except what existed under Geo Washington.
It is bizarre and uniformed. On NPR this AM, I listened to a Congressman from Tennessee speak proudly about who Tennessee balances its budget – without the interviewer ask him.. but it’s Tennessee (so really not relevant to the US today).
